Our story

Preserving PNW was founded by a group of ten high school students in Washington who felt a deep connection and drive to care for the natural world. Much of our work is inspired by the Southern Resident Orcas, a unique family of orcas in the Salish Sea. Their deep family bonds, traditions, and strength inspire us daily. Although the Southern Residents need our help! They are threatened by a lack of food, pollutants, and boat vessel noise. After learning about the issues that orcas and salmon face in the Pacific Northwest, we felt empowered to take action. We devised a plan to help our environment through projects focused on outreach, restoration, conservation, and action. Tackling these issues head-on by leading several R&S groups with weekly or bi-weekly meetings, hosting events, and long-term projects to make lasting change.
Initiatives
Our initiatives are all youth-led, community-based projects and events. For outreach, we hold webinars, public speaking, and tabling events, and educational events for various ages. Our founder has published two books about the Southern Residents, which can be found in our shop. We lead several programs that people of various ages can get involved with, both in-person and online. We spearhead local restoration projects with Parks Tacoma, where we are doing on-the-ground work to create a better habitat for Pacific salmon. Organizing programs centered around water quality monitoring and management to ensure fewer pollutants enter our waterways.

Programs

We have several programs to get involved with Preserving PNW, for various age groups and geographic locations.
Online: We hold bi-weekly meetings via Zoom to reach more people from different locations and expand our reach. This program mentors young changemakers to start their own groups as well as hold online events such as webinars and outreach events. We work on projects together and create a network of students across the Pacific Northwest.
In person: we also hold several in-person programs to connect with the local community. We have a group for high school, middle school, and elementary school students to get involved with their own action projects at their school communities and beyond.
